Has energy become more of a strategic focus for businesses over the last 12 months?
Haven recently published a new energy report in partnership with the Energyst where we asked respondents if they believed energy had become more of a strategic focus for them over the last 12 months.
Results show that 80% of businesses now look to include energy in their strategic planning, suggesting many businesses are placing an increasing value on where their energy comes from and from which energy source.
This could be down to a number of factors such as the politicization of energy issues driving up the energy agenda and putting pressure on UK businesses to come in line with the European average for using renewable energy sources.
Another factor could be related to impending cuts to renewable subsidies, changes to business energy taxes and thin generation margins. This means many businesses are starting to plan ahead in order to reduce the risk of having any surprises further down the line.
Lastly, the arrival of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) which is mandatory for UK businesses that meet the qualification criteria could play a role in energy strategy decisions. The scheme requires directors to sign off an energy audit every 4 years to identify any cost-effective energy saving measures in their buildings, industrial processes and transportation.
