UK must learn from Australian power cuts, says union

Policy-makers should urgently evaluate the role of renewables deployment in the widespread power outages in Australia, the GMB union has said. Australia has experienced at least four major power cuts in the past five months, and GMB national secretary for energy Justin Bowden said it appeared that transmission systems had been unable to cope with the scale of power that had to be moved from one part of the country to another when renewables were not generating. “GMB remains very concerned about possible power supply shortages across the UK as a whole at times of peak demand as the fossil fuel stations are phased out but before the new nuclear power stations fleet is on stream”, he said.
